Elected has arrived!

Congratulations, Rori, on the release of Elected. Like me, Rori lost her publisher when Entranced closed it’s doors, and Rori led me to the new publisher that we now share: Silence in the Library Publishing. The kickstarter to this book is available athttp://tinyurl.com/ElectedNovel. You will be able to get a copy of ELECTED in hardcover and/or paperback with a free ebook, a lot of special limited-edition items and other free books. I asked Rori what led her to write the Elected Series . Here’s what she had to say:

I woke up one morning with the plot for all three ELECTED Series books in my head. I wanted to write about the importance of protecting the environment as well as the notion of tolerance, so those are two big themes that run through the series. Many futuristic YA books start their story after some kind of environmental or human-created apocalypse, but they never tell the readers what caused the disaster. ELECTED describes exactly what happened when global warming and extreme temperatures affected the earth. Then it explains what laws the remaining world leaders enacted to make sure an environmental disaster never happened again. It’s up to the readers and ELECTED’s main character, Aloy, to decide whether these laws are fair or what they would do in the same situation.
Also, one of my major projects in college was an environmental thesis with a diverse group of technology-infused engineering students. I was one of the only people on the team from a business major. But the project got me very involved with environmental themes as we research pfisteria in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. I think what we do to our air, water, and overall environment has big impacts. I wanted to show this first-hand to young adults through a medium that wouldn’t be preachy. Instead of a lecture on environmental preservation, I hope that the message comes across much more smoothly through a dystopian novel.
If I had a tip for reducing a negative environmental impact it would be that everyone can do something. Whether it be walking or riding a bike more often and as an alternative to driving, recycling water bottles, drinking from a coffee mug instead of getting a takeaway styrofoam cup, turning off computer screens at work when you leave for the day, etc. Every little bit makes a difference.

YA Sci-fi

April 22, 2014

It’s the year 2185, and in two weeks, Aloy will turn eighteen and take her father’s place as president of the country. But to do so, she must masquerade as a boy to avoid violating the Eco-Accords, four treaties designed to bring the world back from the brink of environmental extinction. Aloy hopes to govern like her father, but she is inheriting a different country. The long concealed Technology Faction is stepping out of the shadows, and as turmoil grows within her country, cryptic threats also arrive from beyond the borders.

As she struggles to lead, Aloy maintains her cover by marrying a woman, meanwhile battling feelings for the boy who knows her secret – the boy who is somehow connected to her country’s recent upheaval. When assassination attempts add to the turmoil, Aloy doesn’t know whom to trust. She understood leadership required sacrifice. She just didn’t realize the sacrifice might be her life.
