A Death in the Pages

I killed a character. It’s been coming for a long time. I knew it had to happen; it’s the only way forward. So I killed the character.

I’m working on the final book in The Tethering series, and ending a series you’ve spent so long on is hard. Saying goodbye to the characters you’ve built. Saying goodbye because you’ve killed them is worse.

But I feel surprisingly okay about it. It was a good death. A brave death. One that means something. I couldn’t be kind. So they raged against the dying of the light. Fighting with everything they had. I’m sorry they’re gone. But there was no other choice. And at least their final bow was a blaze of glory.

So goodbye, sweet character. You will be missed. I’m sure people will be angry that you are gone. But this was your path. You followed it bravely to the end. Thank you for the words you gave me to write. Thank you for the wisdom I found in your thoughts. Now rest well while the story continues.
